Brianna Bell- Define Citizen

September 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The topic of this weeks blog is to define a citizen. The definition of a citizen is a legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized. That definition doesn’t really make much sense to me or means anything to me. A citizen is someone who cares for where they live. A citizen takes pride in their country, state, or region. Citizens of the United States come in all shapes and sizes. They also may not all feel how I feel about what or how a citizen should be. Some citizens don’t care at all about where they live. They litter, kill, and steal; and overall have no respect for their place of citizenship. These citizens don’t deserve the right to be a “citizen”. There are so many people trying to become citizens and they have to go through a lot to do so. There are many people who abuse the right to be a citizen, they don’t realize that they are privileged to be a citizen.

I don’t think its obvious to tell when someone is a citizen. Citizenship is not visible for the eye to see. Patriotism on the other hand is visible but doesn’t always mean citizenship. I believe citizenship is a legal category because to become a citizen isn’t about anything besides legal aspects. To become a citizen you have to go through a legal process. I don’t really have any experiences with citizenship because i have always been a citizen from birth. Like many other people being born into the United States, i take for granted the rights that i have but i do realize that i am blessed to be a part of this country.
