Freshman Seminar 1000 (Louis)

Moving Up and Moving On

My development as a Xavier student has definitely had an impact on my development as a Xavierite. As I am nearing the end of my first semester of college, I feel as though in this short yet compelling time span I have made mature descisions whether it be socially, financially, etc. Even though I did not have the opportunity to go away to college, i do not feel like I have missed out or did not gain the “college experience”. Uopn entering Xavier I had the mindset that I would not gain a culture experience. Reflecting on this semester, I made friends from all over the nation and realize that we have more in common than I would imagine. I can definitely say that Xavier has helped me open my eyes to wonderful things and experiences. Having attended college for such a short time has already molded me to be a more well rounded young lady I was hoping to become at college. I can see an improvement in myself in areas such as confidence, well being, and motivation, and so can my friends and family.

me

November 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In these last few months i have been exposed to a new expierence and that expierence is called college. I have met and made all types of new friends. College for me so far has been a good expierence and as far as the last three months go i have no regrets. I feel like I am still not apart of Xavier like i should be. I think I should get more involved on campus and find an orginization to join. I find myself having a lot of spare time on my hands and these last few months i devoted that time to studying and sleeping. I feel like i can plan and balance my time better than i ever could, but i feel like i can still improve. Transition from highschool life to college life hasn’t been a big change for me and i feel like over this past few months time has been moving by fast. My identiy has been growing on campus i feel like i know a lot of people and a lot of people know me. As far as, school and books i think i fall into the same catergory of every college student by procrastinating and waiting until the last minute to do things that i don’t like to do for example; blogs and papers, and that is something i feel like i have to change in the upcoming months. I feel different as of now and i feel like i have changed for the better since i have been in college and i feel that i am still changing.

The Xavier Experience

November 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So far my Xavier experience his been wonderful it has been a totally different life change for me since high school. Xavier is a wonderful school everything they tell you before you arrive is true, everything and everyone about the school makes you seem welcome. Despite the hurricanes and reasons for missing some school days the school kept you informed day by day. The teachers this everything they could to make sure you was aware of what you need if you were away as so that you would not fall behind. All that was being done by the facility of the school even though they had families of they own to worry about. By the whole different world college has to offer its rarely easy to fall behind in you class assignments. In college mostly everything is done my computer you homework studying etc…I have gotten distract many times so far being in college. Now i have to try my hardest to bring it up are risk being on academic probation and getting kicked outta school. That another thing about college that just makes it so different if your grades are bad you can get put out and on probation. High school if your grades are bad well they  are just bad you stay in and that the chance just to fail. A personal identity that I have with Xavier is that its the kind of school that I want to be apart of. Its not so much of a party college all the students know what they want out of life and know why they are here at Xavier. It relates me to the world so by time i finish college i will already know what i want in the world. The career i want to succeed in for my future.

Changes for Freshmen Seminar

November 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Hi, Kenisha here now some things I would change about freshmen seminar is basically everything. In my freshmen seminar class we talk about citizens, citizenship, and where we are from a lot. To me it should not be about that it should mostly be about how to make it through your freshmen year. Some ends an outs about being a freshmen. We have had reports due for class asking to describe what a citizen is to you and how are you classified as a citizen. The assigns that we have to do for that class does not really fit freshmen seminar at all to me. Now something about that class that i would keep is my teacher Dr. Ross because he is the most down to earth teacher i have ever been in the presence of. He does not really act to the terms of a teacher. The most boring assignments he makes seem fun to do and that we would lean a lot out of it. Something that would be a perfect Freshmen seminar experience is that since our class is mostly about areas around us and the people around us. A perfect thing would be to for our class around the New Orleans area to all of the hot spots that makes New Orleans New Orleans. It would give us that opportunity to see that different cultures that New Orleans have to offer. We could see the different tourist that come to visit New Orleans. Maybe ask them if they like it and where are they from and do they differ at all or have similar aspects.

Problems

November 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

To me some problems that need to be addressed in New Orleans is the crime. New Orleans is known as the murder capital of the world. Even though New Orleans is know for its Cajun food, the super dome, along with the whole Canal,French Quarter thing. New Orleans does in fact still receive a lot of tourist in the city. The fact still stands that the violence in New Orleans is still at an all time high. Many people across the US would like to hav the chance to vist the city of New Orleans. With things the way it is makes it hard for people to vist, cause they scared to get hurt or loose there life. The crime prople is a major problem that needs to be addressed, because instead of the crime lower its rising. Also many New Orleana residents are afraid of the crime we have. Some dont eve like to leave homes at night, because the risk of getting robbed and killed. The ciry of New Orleans has many abilities to be one of the top cities in the world. Just the way some people decide to behave and react is what makes New Orleansthe way it is. New Orleans is a great city to live in and also visit. Just the crim issure is what makes it not some of peoples frist choice to visit.

Why new orleans has SOUL? Jondrica Jefferson

November 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Shy New Orleans has soul? Is that even a question? everything Tom Piazza wrote had  me smiling because i can relate to what he was saying knowing where eveything is at that he was talking about made me proud to call New Orleans HOME. All the things that he explained about New Orleans gives it soul= the food, second lines, people, parties, wards, french quarter, music and etc i can go on and on. All of these devices of New Orleans comes together and gives it soul sort of like a unique person. If anything was missing New Orleans wouldn’t be who it is or what it is depends on how you identify the place. This city has more soul than some people i have come in contact with. I know its sad. Although many people portray New Orleans as a bad city there are many people that love it because of it has soul. New Orleans is a melting pot meaning that there is a little bit of every thing mixed together in order to make it the great place it is. I thin that is the reason people from all over the world loves New Orleans, there is a little something that everyone can relate to. And it is fun!!!!!

New Orleans, New Orleans there is no place like it. There is no place like home. It does not matter where u are from when you love your city then there is not anyhting or anybody who can keep you away. I remember for hurricane Katrina when my dad told me that we were not coming back and i lost my mind. I was only 15 but i came HOME anyway no matter what my parents said. New Orleans have the best of everything!!!!!!!!!food, parties clubs and etc. but most of all the people. There will never be another place like New Olreans and no matter how many hurricanes come i will always come back. I maybe stuck on New Olreans because of the many great experiences i had here.I do not know what it is and i relly dont care but this will always be my home no matter what!!!!!!!!!!

Katrina victims are not refugees because we are american citizens. When other cities are targeted by natural disasters they do not have to deal with the disrespect of someone calling them refugees. A refugee is someone from another country looking for safety so technically  it was like the people who was calling us refugees were denyin us of our citizenship when we needed them the most. It was and still is a messed up situation because if it would have been people from someone else they would have been treated better.  I feel like they treated us the way they did because of the way the media portrayed us and I also think that it was a racial thing. There are poor white people in New Orleans and there are black people who are not ignorant but it looks like they put the worst that they can But i feel like im getting off  subject. Katrina victims are not refugees simply because they were born in america.
